Kentucky's thrash-metal masters DEVASTATION DEVICE have just finished tracking their new album with Jason Z. at Full Spectrum Studios. The album will be the bands most amazing display of metal mayhem to date. New review up for A.F.S. "IMMATURE NOBODIES" by Fungal Punk

I hate AFS!  They are the biggest bunch of wasters I could ever think of.  Their attitude stinks, they can't play a note and they all smell of brontosaurus poo.  And, worst of all they keep releasing records that I personally think are great and can't help but gush over when writing a review.  This makes me look a right bottom licking 'erbert who is after kipping with a couple of the members for no other reason than deviant desires.  Well I am straight, I don't fancy any of the band and I am going to rubbish them as best I can with the forthcoming assessment.  Well forget the last one because...the darn tinkers have produced their best stuff to date and asked yours truly to do the analysing duties.  The swines, the dirty rotten swines - ooooh how I hate them for this.  Calm down Fungal, calm down.  Deep breaths, pen to paper - and here we go...
 
This shit album...ooops sorry - this fine album kicks off with a song called 'Unite'.  An incisive thrust merges into light melody that AFS are renowned for with that slight tetchy edginess they so craftily intertwine within the weave of the song thus coming up with a harmonious output that is both readily identifiable and punk as fuck.  It hurts to say this but it is a glorious start.  Next 'Chicks, Beer, Fame and Money'  which is in essence a pop song at its cheesy, simplistic  best but with a mean driven bass, cute drums, sinewy guitar and the ever present gravelled vocals it is a lot more.  Pick it up, play, enjoy - no worries at all. Best song of the CD - fantastic!
 
'Attitude' shows AFS have clout and when they do backlash they do it hard and with spite.  The taloned opening guitar sequence scratches deep and makes way for both a musical and verbal hammering.  No nonsense, straight to the point on all fronts.  Public Health Warning - AFS don't fuck about!
 
Ok so you record your first album in the U.S., what do you do?  Play it safe or compose a song that questions the war mongering politics of the government?  Come on now this is AFS we are talking about!  Another great song that does indeed pose awkward questions but is delivered with a resigned bewilderment and almost melancholic disillusionment.  It is a beauty and only this outfit could combine the opposing sound and lyrics and get away with it - cute! An insane hybrid next that combines the tunes from 70's detective TV acid trips and a Gerry Anderson Marionation theme.  Add in a bit of  Micheal Bentines Potty Time and you get the gist.  'Wrong Time, Wrong Place' is a yodelling sabre dance that is punked up by 4 tampering noodles that have opted to experiment.  Who cares anyway - this is a solid instrumental piss-about and does the job nicely - take time out, cross your eyes and shindig.

On to 'The Futility Of War' that again adopts an opening bass groove which raises the curtain for basic drums and stylised guitar before Munki growls his usual wordage in that now familiar fashion.  Regulated and typical of the band - can't complain really.  'La La Land' - enter Carl Arnfield - bald, punking skater potater (spud) who is here, there and everywhere be it by plane, train or....erm, skateboard.  This is a new task undertaken by the workaholic music maker after the options closed around him and he was somewhat cornered into carrying out vocal duties.  Behind the mike, in the midst of a somewhat lonesome guitar that makes this sub-acoustic effort a real ear opener the annoying sod comes up smelling of roses.  This was a test of Carls vocal range that in the past has occasionally been found wanting but here he has somehow pulled it off.  A lovely song that has passion and emotive inflection that deals with the spending frenzy people suffer from when loaded up with cash and facing a wonderland of gambling. 'God Fearing Country' seems back to basics as AFS knock out the song with aplomb.  Straightforward foot soldier shit that stinks as good as ever.  It's a trick used several times but hey when it's this good why not?  This may be the weakest and plainest song on the CD but it is still quality which says quite a lot.

Chop, chop and 'Running' cuts to the quick with another obvious surge that has the Arthritic signature running all the way through it. It cruise, spasms and easily picks up the rhythm again before slipping into easy mode with a style oozing class. We finish with the popped and punked 'WDWTFWW (We Do What The Fuck We Want)! Great chorus that disagrees nicely with the stubborn verse and sets up a song to please the most ardent punk pig. An hidden track awaits the patient but what it is and the style it is delivered in will stay secret until you buy your own copy. Get them cowboy boots on though and practice ya spittin' boy - yeeee ahhhhhh!

So there you have it - the old Arthritic Foot Soldiers have me beat again. My critical hand was waiting to pounce and pulverise this bunch of 4 wheeled fuckers for any slip up in quality but alas the poison remains unused. Well perhaps I may not have been so vicious but a bit of an error would have given me the option to use some words I haven't used for AFS before - turd, toss, tit-arse for example. Anyway if you like AFS you will adore this and if you are undecided then this will change your mind and you will be a convert. This is a gem and is an early contender for album of the year - at this stage I can't really praise it more than that!

News 11.08.2008 - TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS would like to welcome the band BEYOND THRESHOLD who have inked a recording deal and will be heading into the studio in December 2008!!  The band formerly known as THRESHOLD (due to legalities the band has officially changed their name) are a 5 piece thrash/hardcore outfit from Rockford, Illinois and have been pounding the Midwestern U.S. for years.  This band is something to watch for.  Their debut album on T.V.R. will be produced by Jason Z. at Full Spectrum Studios in Wisconsin and promises to be a powerful production!!  These guys pack a heavy punch and their live shows are high-energy and amazing to say the least!!  We are very happy to have these guys are part of the family!!

Attended last night and it was an interesting evening to say the least.Congratulations to Man Made Man for putting on such an event. I first heard the band's name over 10 years ago and they have outlasted just about everybody else around here.


I got in during Boneshaker's set and I really like the straight up metal performed by this Wisconsin trio. The top-hatted guitarist could really play and the music was simple and balls-out. Hope to see more of this bunch.


It was Halloween so plenty of costumes were on display. I got a kick out of the guys in the hockey outfits complete with helmets who jumped into the moshpits. There were also some way sexy female ghouls in attendance...my waitress was a hot blonde in a police outfit. I wish she would have been the one to cuff me and beat me at Forest Hills Lodge last year! Yowza! I also got spanked on camera after buying an Evil Threads shirt by a sultry dominatrix in full leather regalia. Footage of this now exists somewhere out there. That's about as close as I get to a sexual experience these days...

New band Myucuss was up next and thought they've been around for a year, it was the first time for me to check these guys out. They were a mixture of a lot of extreme style, with some of it working perfectly and yet other parts seeming rather cookie-cutter. The vocalist, a guy who's been in the scene for years whose name escapes me, can pull off just about every over the top vocal style you can think of.

I talked to the band's manager George in the "suck cock lounge" outside after their set and he's a very nice guy. I think these dudes have a lot of the potential that I saw in Man Made Man years ago and if they can keeping working, they have a good shot at better success.


I managed to connect with Turkey Vulture label manager Jason Z, formerly from the New Society of Anarchists, at the show, as well as Skyler who runs the Culture Shock store. A lot of networking at this show! Sgt. Deth showed up in King Diamond guise once more, but wife Kathy was not as witchy as a couple of weeks previously.


Fallacy is a newer band from Rockford, but these guys are just too dated for me to get into. It is no longer 1998 and rap metal/nu metal is really passe. And that's what these guys played. I didn't like it back in the day and now it's even worse. Their lead singer has excellent energy and stage presence, but this type of music is not going anywhere today.


Hostess of the evening was "The Devil's Daughtet", Szandora La Vey, spawn of the legendary Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. This sinful babe was curvy beyond belief and lit up like a Christmas tree. She did a Satanic "ritual" for us which involved intoning words of wisdom from the Satanic Bible while the disembodied voice of Anton also repeated the phrases. At the conclusion of the solemn ritual, Szandora threw off her cloak to reveal skin tight leather "devil gear". Then, while psychobilly music grinded a way, she used a hula hoop. Though somewhat different than the rites described in "The Satanic Rituals", it was a sleazy bit of silly fun.


Tonight marked the release of Man Made Man's first real CD, which Jason Z was kind enough to give me a copy of. Despite this, MMM's real power is playing live and tonight proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt. These guys are just absolutely crushing live and drove the packed crowd into a frenzy of moshing and slamming. All the tracks came tonight from the debut record "Your Punishment Begins" and were the band's typical mixture of brutal hardcore with black metal, death metal and thrash influences. Right now the guy's have the best drumming and lead guitar playing of their career and the best stage presence as well. Looks like MMM master mind Sean Virgin has finally assembled his ultimate line-up. Look for a review of "Your Punishment Begins" here at Wormwood, but never pass up a chance to see these guys live.
You'll be in for a Slayer-style evening of insane pits and violent metal mayhem!

Must apologize to up and coming Threshold (featuring Sean's brother Eric on vox) and the later bands of the evening. I had been on the go since 5:00 AM and pretty much tanked after MMM's killer set (which has some awesome scenes from silent horror cliassics "Nosferatu" and "Cabinet of Dr Caligari" playing in the background). It looked like the crowd was hanging in there for more.


"Devil's NIght 2008" was a huge success...bring on 2009!!!

News 10.16.2008 -  TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS would like to announce that the Oklahoma death/thrash band SUBMERGED IN DIRT have signed with T.V.R. and have been added to the roster!!!  These guys pack a heavy punch and will be bringing their amazing sound to the masses through a mainstay of shows and tours in the near future!!  The band is scheduled to record their debut album on Turkey Vulture Records early 2009 and will be produced by Jason Z. at Full Spectrum Recording Studios.  Watch for this release to hit stores sometime early summer 2009!!!  Check out submerged in dirt on myspace by clicking here!!!

News 08.26.2008 - TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS would like to welcome SLOW INTENTIONAL DAMAGE to our family of bands!!  SLOW INTENTIONAL DAMAGE will be hitting the studio to record their debut album on TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS early 2009.  S.I.D. does a lot of shows/touring so watch for them to be playing a venue near you!!    Check out their myspace for updates and more info on the band!!

News 08.18.2008 -  MAN MADE MAN's debut release "YOUR PUNISHMENT BEGINS" will hit stores on November 25th, 2008!!!  Right now MAN MADE MAN is  preparing a U.S. TOUR in support of the new release!!!  MAN MADE MAN will also be shooting a music video with director Joe Dean for their single "A FAVORED SON".  Stay tuned for more details!!!

News 05.28.2008 -  LEGIONS OF FIRE have just finished tracking their new album in the studio produced by Jason Z. for their "yet to be titled" debut album coming out on Turkey Vulture Records this fall.  The tracking went  awesome and it will be by far the best work the band has done yet!  A video was shot with producer Joe Dean for their single "5:10" and will be available soon, so check back for the new video!!  Watch for LEGIONS OF FIRE to be on the road soon in a city near you!!

News 03.20.2008 - TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS has just signed a deal with Columbus, Ohio’s 3 piece metal maniacs LEGIONS OF FIRE.  This young group is on a mission and delivers one hell of a punch!!  Don’t let their ages fool you.  These guys take traditional metal seriously and are amazing performers!!!
